Everyone is invited to join us to make a Disappearing 9 Patch Quilt Top that will be perfect for donation to our community!
A Disappearing 9 Patch Quilt is great for the beginner and advanced quilter. Ours will begin with four white 5" squares and forty eight 5" squares in various colors. You will sew those into a quilt square that is three squares wide by three squares tall. You will make twelve of these "9 patch" squares, Next, with direction and help, you will cut each of these twelve squares into four different squares and begin to rearrange them all. The kaleidoscope of quilts will emerge as we all start rearranging our quilts! It will be fun to see what we all create -- using similar fabrics but they will all look different.
We will have a central location in Durham and a zoom set up for others to join us! We hope to have participation from Louisiana, Tennessee, and Ohio as well.
We will provide each of you with sixty 5" squares in various colors. We ask you to bring 1 yard of white fabric pre-cut into forty eight 5" squares, border fabric, and binding fabric to complete the quilt top. (See the side box for more details.)
We will spend the entire day together. We will have snacks and drinks and the option to order a boxed lunch.
After the quilt tops are done, members of CWT will sandwich and quilt them and return them to you for binding and completion!

Many hands worked together on each Fidget Blanket Quilt.
We support a Girl Scout troop in Durham by providing 20 young women with instruction on how to sew. We started with the basics and advanced to making flannel blankets for a local hospital, small bags for the girls to take home with them, Christmas ornaments for a local community, and have moved onto making pillowcases both for donation to Ryans Case for Smiles as well as for the girls to take home. We are following our mission to share our love of sewing, educate others on how to sew, and encouraging them to give items they make back to their community.
We recently completed a 3 week session for teens at the Durham Public Library. Eight teens each made a fidget blanket fidget blanket. The completed items will be distributed to community members with dementia by the library's outreach team. This outreach team visits community members who are unable to get out to the library themselves and provides them with books and support. Learn more about the OASIS program here: https://durhamcountylibrary.org/older-adult-and-shut-in-service/.
Our next session at the library is on April 3, 4, and 5 at the main library. We welcome all teens and adult helpers to join us! If you are an adult helper, contact us at connectingwiththreads2@gmail.com for more information on how you can help with this program! If you are a teen and want to register, use this link https://durhamcountylibrary.libcal.com/event/14178323 to register. As of 3/6/25, there are only 4 seats left!

In December, through a generous donation, CWT members were able to make 6 quilts which were presented to individuals who live in a community group home and have been attending St Joseph AME regularly. Our CWT members and their pastor did a GREAT job of honoring the work. I love the biblical references to the importance of sewing.
